Step 1: Meet the BAS Agent Qualification Requirements

Recognised Bookkeeping or Accounting Qualifications

To become a registered BAS Agent in Australia, applicants must hold recognised bookkeeping or accounting qualifications that meet the requirements of the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

These qualifications ensure applicants have the technical knowledge required to understand GST, BAS reporting, and payroll obligations before providing BAS services to clients.

You can check whether your qualifications meet the TPB requirements using the official eligibility tool.

Step 2: Determine Your BAS Experience Requirement

In addition to holding recognised qualifications, applicants must demonstrate relevant BAS experience before applying for BAS Agent registration with the Tax Practitioners Board.

The number of experience hours required depends on whether the applicant is a voting member of a recognised professional association.

  • 1,000 hours of relevant BAS experience – if you are a voting member of a recognised professional association.
  • 1,400 hours of relevant BAS experience – if you are not a member of a recognised professional association.

Step 3: Gain Your BAS Experience

Once the qualification and BAS experience hour requirements are understood, bookkeepers must gain relevant BAS experience working with real client records. This experience typically involves preparing and reviewing Business Activity Statements, GST coding and reconciliation, and managing payroll and PAYG withholding obligations.

You have a few pathways available to gain your experience:

Operating Under BAS Supervision

Some bookkeepers gain BAS experience while operating their own bookkeeping practice under the supervision of a registered BAS Agent. Supervision provides structured guidance while bookkeepers gain practical experience working with BAS preparation, GST obligations, and compliance processes.

BAS Advisory Group supports bookkeepers by providing BAS supervision designed to help build relevant BAS experience while working with real client records. This experience must involve substantial involvement in BAS services such as GST coding, BAS preparation, payroll compliance, and working with real client records.

Working Under Employment

Another pathway is gaining BAS experience while working for an accounting firm or bookkeeping practice. BAS experience can also be gained while working as a bookkeeper in a non-accounting business, provided the work performed involves relevant BAS services and can be appropriately verified. In these situations, the employer may supervise the BAS work performed and confirm the relevant BAS experience when the bookkeeper applies for BAS Agent registration. This pathway allows bookkeepers to gain practical exposure to BAS preparation, GST reporting, and payroll compliance while working within an established practice or business environment.

Where an employer is unable to formally verify BAS experience, or where additional structure and oversight is required, BAS Advisory Group can provide external supervision (with the agreement of all parties) to support the experience gained and ensure it is appropriately reviewed and documented.

Step 4: Apply for BAS Agent Registration

Once you have completed the required qualifications and gained the relevant BAS experience, you can apply for BAS Agent registration through the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

The application process requires applicants to provide evidence of their qualifications, demonstrate their relevant BAS experience, and confirm they meet the TPB’s fit and proper person requirements.

After registration is approved, BAS Agents are authorised to prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements, provide advice on GST obligations, and interact with the ATO on behalf of their clients.

For many bookkeepers operating their own bookkeeping practice, gaining the required BAS experience under supervision is an important step toward BAS Agent registration. This is where BAS Advisory Group can help.
